कनिष्क के काल खंड की शिल्पकला का बड़ा केंद्र , ध्रुव और नारद सहित अन्य ऋषियों की तपस्थली , आस्था का एक ऐतिहासिक नगर अब कथा वक्ताओं के उद्गम और विशिष्ट क्षेत्र के रूप में विख्यात हो गया।
आधुनिक भारत के विकास के साथ ही मथुरा भी औद्योगिक प्रगति की ओर बढ़ा जिसमें नवरत्नों में से एक मथुरा रिफाइनरी की स्थापना से मथुरा की छवि बदलने लगी। विकास और आधुनिकता की ओर ये एक बड़ा कदम था।
मोबाइल और इंटरनेट क्रांति के साथ कई चीज़ों के अर्थ बदलने लगे। भूमि-भवन की कीमतें अचानक आसमान छूने लगीं। लोगों को एक विशिष्ट कार्य मिल गया। सफ़ेद कपड़े , सफ़ेद जूते , मोबाईल फ़ोन और जहाँ तहाँ पेट्रोल फूंकती दुपहिया और चौपहिया गाड़ियां, कहीं भी हाइवे पर खुले रेस्टोरेंट और ढावे, लम्बी प्रतीक्षा, मीटिंग झगडा करते लोग। खरीदार और भूमि विक्रेता जिनमें कोई भी नहीं, ये भी एक सफ़ेद कार्य था। समय का बदलाव जारी रहा और ये सुखद समय भी जाने को तैयार था। कुछ बने, कुछ बिगड़े लेकिन क्षेत्र का विस्तार हो गया। ऊँची-ऊंची विस्तृत इमारतें , चौड़ी सड़कें, भव्य मंदिर और बढ़ती जनसंख्या सब कुछ बदल गया बस लोगों की आस्था बढ़ने लगी। प्रचार ने पर्यटन का विस्तार किया।
पत्तल की दावत अब "बुफे" में बदल गयी। कोई भी आये प्लेट उठाए और स्वयं ही परोस ले। फ़ास्ट फ़ूड खाने की नयी पसंद हो गया। घर का खाना छोड़कर लोग बाहर खाना पसंद करने लगे। बाहर खाना अर्थात प्रतिष्ठा बढ़ना। मानस पाठ के स्थान पर सास -बहू के झगड़े वाले चलचित्र लोगों के मानस पटल में घर कर गए।
